1. The Writing Center
The Writing Center is a fantastic resource to kick off your Article Critiques! Now that you’ve been assigned groups for your Article Critiques, it’s important to realize uniformity and grammatical accuracy is equally weighted when compared to the overall requirements of this assignment. Dr. Balcom has certain expectations of her students’ writing and this a college course, a Scholarship in Practice (SIP) no less! A major issue with this assignment is making your final product uniform and avoiding contradictions in your writing. I know this can be difficult considering that you are working in groups, but I can assure you that you will not get an A if you do not do this! An easy fix is going to the Writing Center to get assistance for your final product. It’s great when you have an outside source suggesting room for improvement, and strengths and weaknesses of your work. Put in that extra effort to get the A and utilize this free on-campus resource! Make an appointment before it’s too late!

2. Agriculture & Natural Resources Librarian, Alexander Carroll
Alex Carroll has the position of librarian for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR). This would be a great resource for you all to use if you’d like to find specific answers to questions about companion animal care, whether it be about the origins of domestication, or particular animals that you can find in the pet trade today, etc. A major part of this course is about students being proactive in their studies and finding answers for themselves. You have all these technologies and resources at your fingertips! Use them! Remember that you are all scholars in practice! If you want an A in this course, this is how you start! Seek & you shall find!

3. The McKeldin Library
The McKeldin Library has many outstanding resources available for your use such as service desks! I in particular gained a lot of confidence sitting through a scholarly research workshop for this class at this very library. Understand that a major portion of your final grade resides in the two Article Critiques you must complete. It is of the utmost importance that you have confidence knowing the difference between scholarly and lay sources of information. This workshop also helped teach participants how to search through databases that the UMD library has to offer. Your first Article Critique will be about finding one scholarly source. This extra practice for researching articles will be extremely beneficial in the end for you to get that A on this assignment!

4. Textbook: Companion Animals: Their Biology, Care, Health, and Management
Although this is the first semester where there is no required text for ANSC250, this textbook was beneficial when I was enrolled in the course. This exact text used to be required for this class. Please take note that the main reasoning that this textbook is no longer used in this course is because the information is becoming outdated and is not 100% accurate. Dr. Balcom thinks this is a great resource for you all to reinforce what you have been taught in class. About 80% of the information in the textbook is accurate so I would recommend reading and referencing this book when studying for exams. Just an idea to help you all study! There is a copy of this text in Dr. Balcom’s office for your use or you can feel free to rent a copy for the semester!

5. GTA, Tracy Catteron
Tracy has been the GTA of this particular course twice now, so she would be an excellent source to utilize if you ever have a question about the course. Remember what Dr. Balcom said multiple times on the very first day of class? “It’s in the syllabus.” If you have a question pertaining to the course that you cannot locate the answer to within the syllabus, direct your question towards Tracy. Tracy will mostly likely have the answer and if she doesn’t, she will go to Dr. Balcom and post her answer to ELMS for all students to see. Also, Tracy has office hours available every week for you to utilize for any questions regarding course material. Tracy is the only TA that will be grading hourly exams. If you ever have questions about grades on examinations, Tracy is the person you need to go to. Dr. Balcom directly instructs Tracy how to grade each and every question. Don’t be afraid to stop by Tracy’s office even just to say hi!
